Dr. Lanning Tian: The demand for home care beds and elderly care services is huge

Author: Dr. Lanning Tian, Chairwoman of Zhongguancun SSIDC Smart Health and Senior Care Industrial Alliance

Economic Characteristics and Key Points
There is a huge market for elderly health management.

When we talk about elderly care services, the biggest driving force behind it is the issue of elderly health. Our previous expectation was that with the development of technology, people would live longer and the health status and level of elderly people would also improve.

However, in reality, the rate of disability among the elderly has increased in recent years. Whether it is the pandemic itself or the closure caused by the pandemic, it has caused damage to the health of the elderly. During the pandemic, elderly medical services were basically suspended. You can imagine that without a series of care services and health management, there is no doubt that the health maintenance of the elderly will be problematic. In fact, there is a huge demand for elderly health services.

Current policy guidance is guiding the service model

From the supply side, how can we provide more efficient services? How to build a model to format and promote our services more economically? This is another very important issue.

After sharing the theme of home care beds for four periods, I myself have a strong feeling: it is very important to follow the government's policy guidance at the current stage. We have repeatedly heard the strong need within the industry for the "invisible hand" of the government. We hope that the government can have more guidance and more clear indications of development trends in the formulation of policies.

Introducing professional services is a complex problem of resource allocation

The timing, manner, and content of the introduction of professional services such as medical care is a global issue. Especially after we have felt the actual situation of the social, family, and elderly mental aspects of the professional needs and desires for elderly health management and protection, how to introduce professional services into elderly health protection at the appropriate time actually brings a complex social problem of resource coordination.

The elderly care insurance system may be the key to breaking through

From the perspective of social culture and economy, sustainable development and stable economic growth are the eternal pursuit of any organization or enterprise.

However, for the elderly care industry, it is difficult for us to apply or replicate existing economic models. As we have discussed, the industry is still in contradiction regarding the path of development.

The intervention of professional services involves the complex issue of resource allocation. The timing, method, and content of the introduction of professional services, such as healthcare, are universal issues worldwide. Especially now that we have experienced the social, family, and psychological needs and desires of the elderly for professional healthcare management and security, the appropriate timing of introducing professional services to ensure the health of the elderly poses a complex societal problem that requires resource coordination.

The pension insurance system may be the key to breaking the impasse. From a societal, cultural, and economic perspective, sustainable development and stable economic growth are the eternal goals pursued by any organization or enterprise. However, it is difficult for us to apply or replicate existing economic models to the pension industry. As we have already discussed, the industry is still conflicted about the development path.

The needs of the elderly are multiple and complex, and we both hope to pursue "package services" and highlight "core services," which in itself is contradictory. Referring to the economically developed elderly service systems abroad, their sustainability lies in the long-term support of institutional policies, with sufficient insurance linkage support from the first, second, and third sectors, whether it is medical care, pension, or long-term care.

However, for us, in the rapidly evolving aging process, the labor shortage caused by the declining birthrate means that the continuous accumulation of this economic reservoir cannot meet the consumption requirements of growth, and may face a certain degree of "water scarcity."

In Japan, which faces the same problem, many of their reforms have focused on the sustainability of their care-related insurance.

Thinking about future development and making appeals
Exploring special solutions for China

For us, in light of the above problems and references, how can we find or explore an economic model with "Chinese characteristics"? For example, in the case of numerous beds for the elderly but difficulty in finding a single available bed, how can we provide the elderly with a reasonable, acceptable, and era-appropriate solution, which requires us to continuously apply our wisdom and explore together. So far, this topic is just getting started.

Dialectical view of economization

Secondly, can we to some extent restrain our thirst for rapid economic growth and focus more on pursuing a diversified, long-term, socially and economically enriching approach that brings about "happiness and stability"? This also requires the use of social forces and collective wisdom to engage in dialectical discussions.

Wisdom of frontline practitioners

Of course, I want to express my gratitude to all member units and colleagues for their passionate discussions and sharing of multi-perspective thinking in this conference. The wisdom of everyone has been fully demonstrated and utilized in frontline practices. I can feel that substantial explorations, including the intelligentization and economicization of family bed space, have been constantly experimented and implemented, which is a shining point that was not present in the past few years. The results are also obvious, and the role and efficiency of intelligent devices integrated into homes are highly anticipated.

Collaborative innovation on the alliance platform for continuous promotion of technological services

Finally, the alliance platform has played a crucial role as a common platform for providing intelligent devices for complex services targeting multiple communities, which is crucial for us to integrate supply and demand, interact and learn, and work together for development. In these four seminars, I have also seen the hope for the intelligentization of the elderly care industry and the continuous innovation and efforts originating from frontline practices. I salute everyone for their efforts!

I also hope that we can continue to voice our opinions through the alliance platform, expand, showcase, and professionalize everyone's wisdom, promote mutual communication and integration, and generate sparks of thinking and innovation, and then put them into practice to achieve substantial progress in the elderly care industry!
